Integrate Kisi with Google Calendar
Integrating Google Calendar with Kisi lets you keep doors unlocked during calendar events. Map a dedicated Google calendar to a Kisi door. Every event on that calendar becomes an unlock schedule on the door, which stays unlocked for the duration of the event. Changes in the calendar are synced to Kisi periodically.
This is a Kisi-built integration, maintained and supported by Kisi.
Prerequisites
- Kisi organization administrator rights
- A Google account that can see the calendar in its calendar list, either because it owns the calendar or because the calendar is shared with it
When you sign in, Kisi asks for your Google account email and read-only access to Google Calendar. Kisi doesn't write to your calendars.
Set up the Google Calendar integration
Create a specific door calendar in Google Calendar
Every event on the mapped calendar unlocks the door, including events created by anyone with edit access to the calendar. Use a dedicated calendar for each door and limit who can edit it.
- Go to calendar.google.com
- Make sure you are logged in with your work email and not your private account
- On the left side, next to Other calendars, click the + icon and select Create new calendar
- Define the name of your new calendar, e.g. “door timer main door”.
- Create an event in the calendar, which will be the timeframe of your unlock timer. E.g. if you want your doors open during business hours, create an event that runs Monday - Friday, 9 AM-5 PM.
Configure the integration in Kisi
- Sign in to Kisi
- Click the integrations icon (3x3 grid of dots) > Add Integration
- Enter a name for the integration, e.g. "Google Calendar Unlock Schedules"
- Open the Type dropdown and select Google Calendar
- Click Add integration
- Choose the Google account you want to integrate with and allow all requested permissions
- On the Google Calendar Scheduler page, click Add Calendar
- Under Select email account, select the Google account you authorized
- Under Select Calendar, select the calendar. Up to 10 upcoming events from the calendar appear under Some of the events in this calendar.
- Select the place and the door
- Leave Enabled on
- Click Save
To test it, go to your Google Calendar and create a new event. Within about 15 minutes, the event appears in Kisi as an unlock schedule under Doors > your door > Unlock schedules.
How syncing works
Kisi syncs each calendar at least every 15 minutes. A newly added calendar mapping waits for the next periodic sync. Saving an edit to an existing mapping triggers a sync right away.
- Timed events become single unlock events, and all-day events become all-day unlock events. The schedule name is the event title.
- Recurring events are synced as individual occurrences.
- Changes to an event's time or title update the existing unlock schedule.
- Deleted or cancelled events have their unlock schedule removed.
Only events from now through the next 7 days are synced, and at most 25 events per calendar mapping per sync. If a calendar has many short events within a week, some may not be synced.
When a door reaches its unlock schedule limit, events that aren't scheduled yet are skipped. Events that are already scheduled keep syncing.
Manage Google accounts
To use calendars from more than one Google account, go to Settings > Configure Emails on the Google Calendar Scheduler page.
- Add an account - click Add email and sign in with the other Google account
- Check an account - each account shows its status, Valid or Invalid
- Delete an account - delete the account from the list
An account that still has calendars mapped can't be deleted. Kisi shows Unable to delete email with "This email has calendars associated with it. Please remove all associated calendars before deleting the email." Remove its calendar mappings first.
Remove a calendar mapping
- On the Google Calendar Scheduler page, select the calendar mapping
- Click Delete and confirm in Delete Calendars
Deleting a mapping also removes the unlock schedules it created. If the mapped door is deleted in Kisi, the mapping is removed automatically.
Troubleshooting
Google Authorization failed
If you clear any requested permission on the Google consent screen, setup fails with Google Authorization failed and "Please select all requested permissions". Click Retry and allow all requested permissions.
A mapping shows Unauthorized
If Google authorization is lost or revoked, the mapping's status shows Unauthorized and syncing stops for that account. All organization administrators receive an email with the subject Action Required: Kisi Integration Authentication Error.
To fix it, open the mapping and click Reauthorize. The dialog shows "Your Google authorization has been invalidated". Sign in to Google again and allow all requested permissions.
A mapping shows Disabled
The integration turns a mapping off, which shows as Disabled, when:
- Events can't be read from the calendar, for example because the calendar was deleted or is no longer shared with the Google account
- Kisi denies the integration access to manage the door's schedules
To fix it, correct the cause, then open the mapping, switch Enabled back on and click Save.
